I consider myself to be very lucky to work in a company like Scott Safety. Recently, I was reminded again of some of the reasons I choose to work for Scott when we hosted the “Choice of the Brave” 5K event at our facility.
The event pulled together local fire departments, Scott employees, and the community to raise almost $8,000 for the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NCFFF). That in itself was great to be a part of, but for me the day represented what is great about our company.
At Scott Safety, our mission is about more than just providing world-class safety products to firefighters. It’s about people. Here’s how:
1. A deep partnership with the fire services community: In our small event, we were able to draw over a dozen departments from the area to participate, many of which volunteered to help themselves. When I attend conferences and other events, and talk to our customers, it often feels less like business and more like a family reunion, and I think that says a lot about the connection that our customers have with our company and vice versa.
2. A mission of safety: Everyone knows Scott Safety as “the Air-Pak company” and we are proud of the trust that firefighters put into our products. But, our mission around firefighter safety goes beyond the products we make, and extends into support of world-class training events and firefighter fitness events around the world. The 5K event was just another opportunity for us to support fitness, just like we do every weekend with Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge events and stairclimbs across the nation.
3. A culture of giving: One of my favorite parts of this job is the opportunity I have to give back to the fire services. Whether it be national organizations such as the NFFF or Firefighter Cancer Support Network, or regional non-profits like burn centers or, in this case, the NCFFF, we know that these groups are also focused on the health, safety, and care of our firefighter community, and it is great to work for a company that will reinvest its earnings into great groups like these.
4. My co-workers: Nothing that I wrote about above happens without great people, and we have some of the most generous, passionate, and dedicated employees you could ask for. Whenever we hold a volunteer event, I am blown away by the support of my colleagues, and this weekend was no exception. Dozens of our employees and their families volunteered to help, and dozens more supported through participation. And it was all started by our 2016 interns, an amazing and diverse group of young men and women who took the initiative on their own to organize this 5K as a way to give back to Scott and the community.
Next time you are in the neighborhood, I hope you will reach out to us for a tour and to meet the great people here at our Monroe, NC, facility so you can see for yourselves what we do every day: delivering the best products and services we can to our firefighters, military personnel and industrial workers across the world.
